Here are the instructions for the 9 Patch Coaster we made/started in art. Pictures will be forthcoming.
1. Pick 9 2 inch squares.
2. Draw the seam lines on the back of the middle 3 squares. These will be 1/4 inch away from one side and 1/4 inch away from the opposite side.
3. Use 2 pins and placing 2 squares (1 with a line and 1 without) together right sides together (pretty sides kissing), put the pins in perpendicular to the seam lines.
4. Use Needle and Thread to stitch on the seam line.
5. Open it up, add a 3rd square for the row across and pin and stitch the same way.
6. Once you have 3 sets of 3 squares sewn together, you will draw your 1/4 inch seam line on the back on the long side of the middle set of 3. 1/4 inch from one long side, and 1/4 inch from the other long side.
7. Pin and stitch the rows together the same way you did the squares, the pieces are just bigger.
8. Layer the batting square and your freshly sewn 9 patch pretty side up.
9. Fold your 5 inch squares in half and "weave" them for the top layer of the project sandwich, and pin. Your raw edges will be along the outside edges of the project so you can flip the project inside out when you are done.
10. Draw a 1/4 inch seam line along the outside edges of the project.
11. Stitch all the way around all 4 sides of your project.
12. Trim your corners (not all the way to your stitching line, but this will reduce bulk.
13. Flip the project inside out.
14. Enjoy your homemade coaster.
